Brazil is considered one of the biggest world producers and consumers of heart-of-palm, and commercial production of australian king palm (Archontophoenix spp) is featured in Santa Catarina and Paraná (States in Brazil). In Santa Catarina, it is grown for about 1,700 farmers in the area of, approximately, 3,500 ha. This activity generates for state values around R$ 70 million annually and, approximately, 2,800 direct jobs. Archontophoenix spp. has six species, among which stand out the A. alexandrae and A. cunninghamiana. It has intensified studies with this palm as an alternative way to reduce the impact of the over exploration in Euterpe edulis, which is native to Brazil. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare thirteen progenies for four traits associated with heart-of-palm yield. The progenies were evaluated for plant height, stem diameter, premium heart-of-palm and edible basal stem in random block design, with six replicates and eight plants per plot. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Gene software. There was statistical difference, for the Scott-Knott test at 5%, between progenies for all traits. Mean values were of 290.54; 10.38; 184.38 and 275.15 for plant height, stem diameter, premium heart-of-palm and edible basal yield, respectively. CVs ranged from 2.81 up 17.33% for edible basal and premium heart-of-palm yield, respectively. We conclude that the progeny 13 stood out with average values that were among the best for all evaluated traits. |
